Farming Lesson
When I was in my elementary days, I learned farming lessons by watching, listening and doing it by myself. Some of the farming lessons I learned were from my parents and grandparents. In farming, you must have patience in learning it because while you are farming, you will be exposed to the sun.
During my first time to gather vegetables, I thought it was very easy that I just picked string beans without knowing that some of the string beans were not yet ready for harvesting. When I gave the string beans to my parents, they laughed because I gathered all, the young ones. The string beans were soft when I first touched it that I also loved pinching these.
When the gathering of the fruits came, my parents didn’t let me harvest because all of the trees were high. When my father climbed up the tree, a lot of birds flew away and all of them were twittering while going to other trees. I also noticed the cicada’s loud buzzing while my mother was whistling hoping for a breath of cool air. After a while, the cool breeze caused the leaves of the trees to rustle. My father let me catch the coconuts, I caught these but these landed hard on my hands. Meanwhile, my grandfather was gathering bananas. He showed me how to see when bananas were ready for harvest. I ate a piece of which my grandfather gave me and it tasted sweet.
After harvesting fruits, we all went inside the hut to have a rest from the heat of the sun. After having a rest, my grandmother asked me to help her soften the rice field. My older cousin and I went down to help her. Both of us were stepping on the mud like we were plowing it. It was actually hard softening the rice field because it was wide but we did have a good time and we must do hard work since it is where we get our food. After the softening, my mother called us for lunch so we hurriedly went inside the hut because of hunger. After eating, we took a rest and all of us were prepared to go home. While we were on our way, I smelled some scents like that of the vegetables and grasses.
These are my childhood experiences in the rice field. To have a good result in your work, you must be patient and hard working. Listen first before you do it because one mistake may lead to failure. This was what I learned from the fields.
